Fran

65-year-old Fran says that being a single foster parent has not only enriched her own life, but also that of her biological children. Although they are grown up and have left home, all continue to stay in contact.

“It’s so heart-warming to see the unique bond they have. There is no distinction as we’re all one family”.

Fran is one of our most experienced foster carers and has been fostering for more than 30 years. Fran would advise new foster parents not to be nervous, as the young people and children are probably feeling even more nervous. She suggests that time to listen and validating concerns is important, as it may be something they have not experienced before.

“It’s not all about the big gestures. It’s can be the subtle things, like having a routine and some home comforts, which make the difference”.

Fran feels that people may be surprised at just how suitable they are and how much they get back in return.

She says: “You often want to change the world but when you foster a child you often end up changing their world. And your own”.
